Wingate Baseball is on a Victory Roll

Rachel Lods, Staff Writer

Wingate, N.C.- For most of the students at Wingate, early March is a time to look forward to because it is a time to forget about midterms and take a break. The Wingate University Baseball team, however, has a much different perception of what the first two weeks of March consists of.

For these bulldogs, it is simply another week to get out on the field and perform at the highest level, and these Bulldogs did just that. Spring Break can be a distraction for some of the spring sport athletes at Wingate University, but this was not the case for the baseball team, who improved to 4-0 in SAC play with 7-3 win over visiting Mars Hill. The Bulldogs improved to 13-9 overall while the Lions fell to 10-11 overall.

An unprecedented six players from Wingate drove in runs Friday night, scoring five runs in the first inning. Joseph Mason (Morehead City, N.C.) led the Wingate offense with a double, two RBI and a run scored.

Other notable bulldog performances came from sophomore Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.) who went three-for-four with an RBI and sophomore Micah Goodwin (Rougemont, N.C.) also racked up a hit and an RBI.

A win in baseball requires not only a good offense, however, but a good defense as well. Senior Brandon Donahue (Charlotte, N.C) and senior Cameron Price(Indian Trail, N.C) helped the Bulldogs clinch the win with their impeccable performances on the mound. Donahue only allowed one earned run on five hits with six strikeouts, while Price earned a scoreless inning, getting his first save of the season.

Wingate will face Mars Hill in a three-game series in hopes they can remain undefeated in the SAC and continue to improve their standing.
